Empowering a global community of Nature Citizens.
For the protection and revival of nature knowledge on every continent and in every ocean.
Our objective is to educate and bring urban citizens closer to a more nature-connected world, for them to better understand the core natural processes and to raise awareness of the huge benefits of connecting people with nature.
With more than a half of the world’s population currently living in the cities, the urban areas have become the primary habitats of us humans. Disconnected from the natural world, the expansion of cities inevitably contributes to climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. This affects the safety, health and well-being of millions of people.
Many people living in cities are disconnected from nature and each other, and as a result they are more vulnerable to mental or neurological disorders. Being nearby nature, even in small amounts, can have a significant impact on our individual and community well-being. When we make room for nature we are healthier, our stress levels go down, and our children learn better.
But rather than embracing nature, we’ve built our cities and towns to work against it – and ultimately ourselves. Nature offers a vital buffer against pollution and other environmental stressors.
Moreover, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests contact with nature provides a multitude of health benefits and may be an important factor in disease prevention and health promotion for people who live in urban areas. This is also why many doctors are beginning to prescribe “time in nature” for conditions including obesity, depression, anxiety, and diabetes.
Connecting nature with cities and educating people about the benefits of the connection is not only our priority, but also one of the messages of the UNEP (The UN Environment Programme).
Rewilding our cities and ourselves is an essential step in the transition towards a sustainable future.
As the UN Secretary-General has said, “making peace with nature is the defining task of the 21st Century. It must be the top, top priority for everyone, everywhere”
It is now time we improve our relationship with nature and understand its value.
